28 July (Wednesday):

Leave Chicago at 4:10 pm, terminal 5, SwissAir 125

29 July (Thursday):

Arrive Zürich at 7:40 am; Drive to Luzern to spend the day getting acclimated. Stay in Luzern.

30 July (Friday):

Helvetic nappes, Glarus Thrust, and panorama of Falknis nappe. Klausenpass-Lochseite-Kerenzerberg-Prattigau. Stay in Landquart.

31 July (Saturday):

N-S section parallel to the western margin of the Austroalpine nappes. Chur-Lenzerheide-Tiefencastel- Bergun-Abulapass-Piz Alv-Pontresina. Stay in Pontresina — Morteratsch.

1 Aug. (Sunday):

Lower Austroalpine nappes. Cable car to St. Moritz- Piz Nair. Decent Piz Nair — Corviglia- St. Moritz. Stay in Pontresina — Morteratsch.

2 Aug. (Monday):

Engadine line, eastern contact (roof) of the Bergell intrusion.

Walk up Val Forno. Stay at the Forno Hut.

3 Aug. (Tuesday):

Bergell granite, Chiavenna ophiolite, Tambo Nappe.

Maloja-Chiavenna-Novate. Stay in Colico, Italy.

4 Aug. (Wednesday):

Gruf complex, western contact (floor) of the Bergell intrusion, Novate granite. Stay in Colico, Italy.

5 Aug. (Thursday):

Lepontine migmatites, Insubric line, Pseudotacalites, Lavertezzo.

Stay in Locarno.

 

 

6 Aug. (Friday):

Lepontine metamorphism. Cable car to near P. Campolungo.

Stay in Locarno.

   
7 Aug. (Saturday): Val d’Ossola section, Insubric line, Lower Penninic nappes of western Switzerland, Simplon fault. Stay in Täsch.
   
8 Aug. (Sunday):

Overview of the Upper Penninic nappes. Zermatt-Gornergrat-Zermatt

Stay in Täsch.

   
9 Aug. (Monday): Day off in Zermatt. Go Skiing? Stay in Täsch.
   
10 Aug. (Tuesday): Jura Mountains, Alsace wineries. Stay in Labaroche, France.
   
11 Aug. (Wednesday): View eclipse in Strasbourg. Drive to Zurich via Basel.
