Conferences:
Sept 20-21--right now, the Wisconsin Undergraduate Geology Field conference! sorry, this is a bit late.
Oct 20-21-- the National Student Expo is happening in Houston on Quaternary Coastal Environments.
The Iowa Geological Survey is having their Tri-State Geological Field Conference. Oct 11-13, 2002. There are field trips. register now.
March 13-15, 2003. National Conference on Undergraduate Research. Salt Lake City. All disciplines. You must submit your abstract by November 15, 2002
Jobs:
Do you like shi--, I mean sludge? Then this sewage job is for you. Walworth County, Delavan, Wisconsin. preform specialized tasks on samples. Lots of responsibilities--as well as able to lift 50 lbs, and express oneself concisely and verbally. See Carl for job description (you can work weekends, I think...)
There is a tenure track position in the Dept. of Geology at Ohio University. Now, I don't think the search will be going on long enough for us to get our Ph.D--sorry.
Internships:
American Geological Institute's Government Affairs Program. Despite the long title, these internships sound great--learn about the impact of government on the geosciences and how geoscience knowledge impacts environmental policy issues. summer 2003-- $3,500.
Research Training Program. This summer! "mentor with professional scientists!" "experience at the Smithsonian!" Apply by Feb 1, 2003. (Excellent opportunity; highly competitive)
Field Camps:
Wild Rockies Field Institute--Courses 2003. montana, alaska, colorado, california...kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing. get credit for > school by learning about ecology.
Graduate School Opportunities:
Want to go to grad school? want $$? Apply for an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship. The Deadline is November 7, 2002. See Carl.
Go to grad school at Washington State University. get a masters or PhD.
Other News:
Going to GSA? then go to the President's Student Breakfast.(it's FREE) sunday Oct 27th. Denver, Colorado.
Now--I know we all love volcanoes. Go to the Seminar room and read about the "happenings" of recent volcanoes. The Bulletin of the Global Volcanism Network. (put together, in part, by Beloit grad. Ed Venzke)
