Here are items of geologic interest that have been sent to our department recently. Our reporter is senior geology major Elise Pope-Obeda.
Graduate Studies:
Wild Rockies Field Institute
The Wild Rockies Field Institute is an independent, nonprofit educational organization that offers academic field courses in ecologically and culturally interesting places in North America. The WRFI integrates field studies, service projects, and meetings with government officials and community members. One- to nine-week ourses offer travel, cmap an dsutyd in such places as Southeast Alaska's rainforest, the Rocky Mountains, from Yellowstone to British
Columbia, northern Minnesota's boundary waters, Utah's canyonlands, and Mexico's Baja Peninsula and Yucatec Mayan villages. These classes provide transferable credits to a masters or PhD program.

Indiana University Summer Field Programs
Already anxious about this summer? Well, Indiana has some field geology courses in Montana that certainly would rock! June 28 - August 7, 2005 Field Geology in the Rocky Mountains is a capstone course for undergraduates and fist year graduates. Emphasis in this program is plaed on the field analysis and interpretations of local and regional geology. The work includes an introduction to field techniques and geologic mapping on aerial photos and topographic base maps. Also included are field trips to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. June 28 - August 7, 2005 Field Geology in the Rocky Mountains with Environmental Component covers geologic reconnaissance, measurement of stratigraphic sections, mapping on aerial photos and construction of structure sections. Additional training in surficial geology, including weathering and soils, surface and ground water hydrology, field chemistry, and field instrumentation are provided in a series of teaching modules focusing on near-surface processes. Also included are the trips to Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks. An Introductory Field Experience in Environmental Science course is being offered July 6 - August 7, 2005. This course is designed to introduce students to field-based scientific investigations. Students are expected to be science majors with an interest in environmental science. First-hand experience in various environmental sciences including ecology, environmental chemistry, geology, hydrology, and meteorology will be obtained. Course includes trips to Badlands and Yellowstone. For each of these field courses, credit is offered. For more information, visit http://www.indiana.edu/~iugfs or email iugfs@indiana.edu
