From your new correspondent, Bethany Weisberger!

You have all been waiting in anticipation. Well, here it is, the, the, list of, well, er, I'm not sure what to call it, but here it is:

Summer Field Schools:

Southern Utah University www.suu.edu/sci/physci/fieldcamp/index.html

Eastern Illinois University Geology Field Camp, Black Hills, SD www.eiu.edu/~geoscience

Wright State University www.wright.edu/geology

University of Nevada, Reno www.mines.unr.edu/fieldcamp/

San Jose State University

Idaho State University wapi.isu.edu/fieldcamp

Iowa State University www.geology.eastate.edu

University of New Mexico epswww.unm.edu/field/home.htm

Wasatch Mountains, Utah (the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh) www.uwosh.edu/faculty_staff/paulsen/FC_02.htm

This isn't field camp, but it also isnŐt a "summer opportunity," since you have to pay for it. And you get credit for geology. It is a field course in Alaska-Canada, learning Expedition Training in Arctic and Mountain Earth Systems Sciences. If I had $3,900 to throw around, I would be here in a second. It sounds tough, but awesome. But, hey, they offer some scholarshipsÉ http://www.mines.uidaho.edu/glacier

Graduate School Opportunitites:

1 year fellowship in the Exploration of Geophysics, with the University of Texas at Austin. The fellowship includes a $22,000 stipend. www.geo.utexas.edu

If you want a MasterŐs in geosciences and petroleum and natural gas engineering, than PennState is the place for you. http://hydro.geosc.psu.edu/geosystems.html

Idaho State and University has both Masters and Doctorate programs available to YOU. Wide range of current projects, from hydro to igneous petro to GIS.

University of Southern California. Also, many opportunities. Find out more online: www.usc.edu/dept/earth/academics/grad/gradpack/

Ph.D Fellowship at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. Study the Dynamics of Methane Bubble in Marine Sediments. http://diagensis.ocean.dal.ca

And lastly: Rice University. The Sloan Professionsl MasterŐs Program. These are graduate studies which combine the natural sciences with the business aspect. Especially applicable in this day in age. Gain hands on training and business that is highly valuable by industry. And, the coolest thing, you could be getting your masterŐs in something called: "DECISION MAKING." What fun! I have a masterŐs degree in decision making!

Other News:

ANDŃcoming in October 2002. The NEW (and I would guess hopefully improved) GRE.

In the seminar room, you can read a short article in "The Professional Geologist" about how geology might give bin Laden Away, by Identifying Location in Afghanistan. I marked the page, check it out.

The Bulletin of Global Volcanism Nework is out. Short reports covering topics of volcanism, obviouslyÉ

This March, the American Association of Petroleum GeologistŐs 2002 Annual Convention is being held in Houston, Texas, and they need student workers from the 8th to the 13th. A few of these days over lap with break. If you are willing to work, you get complimentary registration, as well as lunch and $25. Okay, so it isnŐt that much moneyŃbut, and I quote: Ňcomplimentary convention regristration will provide not only opportunity for them to gain additional technical knowledge, but also the opportunity to meet with geologists working in industry. There are applications available, email questions to Mike Barnes, at prideog@pdq.net

"We shall not cease from exploration and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time." T.S. Eliot
