Dear Geo-nerds,

It's summer at Beloit, but everyone seems to be pretty busy (and I'm doing a good job of faking it...).

Field methods has been going very well. After about 9 days in Beloit, the troops headed out to S. Dakota and Wyoming. Looks like the weather has been pretty good (perhaps a bit cool in spots??).

Dr. Woodard is leaving tomorrow for research in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (Minn.) and Quetico Provincial Park (Ontario). Alum Peter Parham is helping to pack up everything, and Pete, Hank , and Hank's son Mark plan to meet a large group of alumni up in the north country!

Our search for the full-time temporary position in igneous and metamorphic petrology is going well. We've selected two superb candidates to visit Beloit. I will send out more information on their visits, but for now I wanted to let you know that they will be on campus on 1 July and 8 July (both are Mondays).

Field methods students will have returned, and I'm hoping they might be able to attend the candidates' presentations. But I also understand that the students will have their hands full of work...

Finally, I wanted to inform you officially that our proposal for a PERMANENT replacement for Cam has been approved by all levels of the administration. The ad for the position is now approved, and will appear in GSA TODAY and in GEOTIMES in August, September, and October. We will interview the top candidates (12 to 16 of them, I'm guessing) at the Denver GSA meeting. (The person we choose for the temporary position may also be an applicant for the permanent position.)

Finally, I hope you will make a visit to our new and improved web page (http://geology.beloit.edu/). There are still some corrections to be made, but I think it's in very good shape. Please send me any corrections or suggestions, and I'll forward them to Liz Chesser, who has been designing the web pages. Great job, Liz!

Hope you're having a wonderful summer. We look forward to seeing you in the fall.

By the way, thirteen first-years have indicated either a primary or secondary interest in geology. I hope we can have an event early in the fall to show off our department to these budding young earth scientists!

Take care, Carl
